Fritsche's meadow (Glade)

Popis

There were no messages about its origin and the origin of the name (the name only appears on the old city plans). But it is certain that it was founded at the end of the 19th century, at the latest at the beginning of the 20th century, when it was accessed by a paved path with a sand surface from the evangelical church. This path probably served as a promenade not only to the meadow itself, but also to the views of the valley of the Jílovský stream and further to the ridge of Pastýřská stěna. It used to be lined with benches, and it provided the  look back at the Podmokly, as evidenced by postcards from the beginning of the century.

The meadow has a horseshoe shape; i tis interesting that  the same compositional motif was also applied in the central part of Michel's Park by the school at Machovo Square, just a few hundred meters away. Sycamore maples were planted around the perimeter of the upper arch of the meadow. The end of the park is surrounded by a monument of unknown mission with three summer oaks. The monument has been considerably damaged in the past, so today it is a group of several stones. The northwestern part of the meadow is closed by a group of picturesque pine trees. Several paths to the edge of the cliffs with the prospects come out of the access road lined on the west side by  oaks. The lowest point is terminated by a platform, which was probably the basis of the construction of an unknown purpose - kiosk with refreshments. Today, the northwestern part of the meadow is used as a playground, and several benches are located along the upper side of the meadow. The southern part is dominated by the second planted red oak, partly overgrown with birch.

Interesting is also the surroundings of the meadow: to the west of it used to be a quarry *, whose perpendicular walls give the locality a romantic character. The terraces on the edge of the former quarry grow in heather at the end of the summer pink flowering; dominating edge of rocks are dwarf growing oaks of summer oak, hawthorn, access paths lined with some ornamental shrubs, proving the park character of the place: lilacs, spirits and apple trees. Several paths run from the meadow, which are further divided and intertwine the entire peak of the Shepherd's Wall. The paths were originally German names, which were engraved in adjacent rocks and stones. For example, Westliche-weg was headed for the White View.

The construction  Josef Kargel operated the quarry at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It was closed in 1909, poor-quality layers of the massif were used for sand mining in the 1960s. / bnlk
